South Choir Audition Process

Below you will find the step-by-step audition process we will use for 2021-2022 advanced-level choir auditions.  Please share this with any students interested in joining choir!

1) Range Check

  • Descending – “Nee-Ah” (Do-So-Fa-Mi-Re-Do)
  • Ascending – “I Sigh to Sing” (So-Do-So-Mi-Do)

2) Tonal Recall

Singers will be given patterns of 4-7 pitches to sing back on a neutral syllable, “la.”  Students will get to hear each pattern one time and cannot sing the pattern while it is played.

3) Rhythm Reading and Sight-Singing

Singers will be given 4 measure rhythm-reading and sight-singing exercises. Singers will be given 30 seconds to prepare the exercise (during this time students are encouraged to practice out-loud, audiate, or anything that may help them have success in performing the exercise well). Once the 30 seconds ends, students will  perform the exercise to the best of their ability.

4) Scales

Singers will be asked to sing a Major Scale, a Natural Minor Scale, and a Chromatic Scale, all on Solfege, given “Do” and a 4-beat tempo.

5) Intervals

Singers will be asked to sing the following 5 intervals up from “Do” which will be given as a starting pitch: major 3rd, minor 3rd, perfect 5th, major 7th, octave.

6) Prepared Song (To be sung A cappella)
